Seven years ago, on June 12, 2019, millions of Hong Kong citizens took to the streets to oppose the Extradition Bill and defend Hong Kong’s freedom, rule of law, and autonomy. It was one of the most active periods of the Anti-Extradition Movement and one of the largest civil movements in Hong Kong’s modern history.
However, this peaceful and courageous movement was ultimately met with harsh repression by the Chinese Communist Party. In 2020, Beijing bypassed Hong Kong’s legislative process and directly imposed the notorious National Security Law, severely undermining the freedoms, human rights, and rule of law that Hong Kong once enjoyed. Many Hong Kongers have since been silenced, imprisoned, or forced into exile.
On June 12nd 2026, in front of the Public Garden Halifax, our Atlantic regional coordinator Ashlynn Peng organized 7th Anniversary event for Anti-Extradition Movement in Hong Kong, to refuse to forget this painful chapter of history. Thank you to all the Hong Kong friends and supporters who joined us. The weather was quite cold today, and we truly appreciate your presence and commitment. May we continue to preserve memory and stand alongside all those who pursue freedom.

What moved Ashlynn most and remains unforgettable from that year were the lights on Lion Rock. May all those who pursue democracy and freedom be like those lights, scattered across the world, yet still shining. Though separated by distance, may we continue to illuminate and warm one another in the darkness.
